Understanding Employment Drug Test Services

What is a Drug Test?

A drug test is a medical examination that analyzes your urine, blood, saliva, or hair to detect the presence of specific drugs. Urine tests are the most common due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of administration. Employers use these tests to ensure that employees or potential hires are not using illegal substances that could impair their ability to perform their job safely.

Why Employers Use Drug Tests

Employers implement drug testing to reduce workplace accidents, boost productivity, and ensure a drug-free work environment. Drug tests are often used during the pre-employment screening process, but they can also be part of ongoing testing programs (See How to order a Random Employee Drug Test below), especially in industries where safety is a top priority, such as transportation or healthcare.

How to Order a Drug Test for Employment

The first step in ordering a drug test is to visit our employer background check page, then select USA Employee. This page will guide you through the available options and help you select the appropriate test based on your needs. Drug testing is currently unavailable outside the USA.

Step 2: Select the Appropriate Drug Test Panel

Depending on your requirements, you can choose from various drug testing panels. Each panel tests for different substances, and selecting the right one is crucial.

Step 3: Add Additional Background Screening Services

After selecting your drug test, you can also add other checks to round out the screening process:

These checks help you verify key details and make more confident hiring decisions. Just add what you need before checkout.

Step 4: Complete the Drug Screen Order

After selecting your test panel and any additional background checks, enter your applicant’s name and email, add the order to your cart, and check out.

We’ll handle the rest. The applicant will receive an email with their scheduling link and any required forms. Once they schedule, they’ll be sent a donor pass with the lab location, hours, and instructions.

The Drug Testing Process

The Non-DOT (Department of Transportation) drug testing process is standard for most employers who are not required to follow federal DOT regulations. Here’s how it works:

  1. Collection: The applicant provides a urine sample at a designated collection site. The sample is split into two containers: one for the initial test and one for confirmation in case of a positive result.

  2. Lab Testing: The urine sample is sent to a certified laboratory, such as LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics, where it is analyzed for the presence of drugs.

  3. Results: Typically, the test results are available within 2-3 business days. If the test is positive, a confirmatory test using a different methodology (usually gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) is performed, which may take an additional 1-2 days.

  4. Medical Review Officer (MRO) Review: If a test result is positive, a Medical Review Officer (MRO) reviews the findings. The MRO may contact the applicant to determine if there is a legitimate medical explanation for the positive result, such as a prescription.

  5. Employer Notification: Once the MRO review is complete, the employer is notified of the test results. If the test is negative, the process is straightforward. If positive, further action may be required based on the company’s drug policy.
